hi and thank you I appreciate your time. :) I have done my best here with the photos, the red is millet. not sure if this is good enough quality to show anything useful but yes there is a yellow tinge to the urates. Hes still eating and drinking but of course stressed out when I handle him. some of the yellow scales have gone though, but still looks like a mess.
The stools look OK from those pics. The seed sticking to the droppings is normal, as droppings are usually wet anyway. Yes, within a couple of days you will notice the scabs dropping off from the bird, this is normal. In about 7 days time, there should be a very noticeable change where you will see the true damage. Sometimes the scabbing can make it look a lot worse than it actually is, other times it can be worse, sadly.
By the way, Quite often you can find me in the Chatroom on here, it is quicker to talk sometimes. I am not always there, but often I am because from time to time others nip in for a quick chat or ask for help
Some good news today, I can see him moving his toes on the bad foot. still keeping up with the vaseline with some neem mixed in. His foot still looks very swollen though.
The swelling will go down gradually, it will not happen overnight, sadly. You should start to see some improvements soon. When the swelling goes down, you can probably remove that ring. If it is the ring causing the swelling then it will need to come off asap.
not a good update today :( he has lost weight at a considerable rate and become very depressed looking, I think its the stress of being handled. I am trying to syringe feed him but hes really not wanting to cooperate. I think I got one mouthful into him which isn't going to do much. I have spark in his water and Hes sleeping mostly now in front of the heat bulb and I expect him to pass away this evening or during the night. I will try feeding again in an few hours but he really is terribly thin. I will update further when I can. open to any last minute suggestions that might help him pull through. thank you.
Poor little fella, I hope he makes it. He might have something else wrong with him if he is losing weight, such as coccidiosis, canker, but it is hard to determine without seeing a poop sample under the microscope. What treatments have you tried so far?
Harkers 4in1 would probably fix the weight loss issue > Harkers 4in1 on Ebay
thank you, I gave him more red millet, he is trying to eat it but is very weak, I ordered the 4 in 1 soluable not sure if it will get here in time, but I can use it for my other finches. they were just treated for canker and I was leaving a gap before worming/cocci treatments would it be okay to use this instead for them that close to the ronivet I just used? I don't like overdoing a lot of treatments especially all at once. also what is the dosage for finches for the 4 in 1?
I am going to just leave the bulb on all night for him, at least he is warm and conserving some energy and pray that he makes it long enough but really am not that hopeful. I did give him 5 days of ronivet 12% but nothing else as yet. never sure about dosing things back to back.
thank you so much really appreciate all the help and support right now. this is difficult and I really want him to make it.
Ivermectin will make no difference to weight loss, Ronivet will not kill coccidiosis. I am very experienced with keeping and caring for birds, many decades of experience, but even I still lose birds to unknown illnesses. We can only do our best, hope for the best. I recently lost a female starfinch who was constantly losing weight, I never could find what was wrong with her despite treating her for everything which causes weight loss. Her weight loss was slow and progressive, so I had time to try various drugs, and give a day's break between treating for the next.
The most common reasons for weight loss in small birds are, canker, coccidiosis, parasitic worms, chlamydia, avian gastric yeast (AGY), salmonella, E-Coli. I may have forgotten a couple, but these are the main culprits. Of course cancer, tumours and injuries are another factor, but in this care I think those can possibly be ruled out.
I hadn't done the cocci treatment yet. I've only had him a short time. the harkers should be here tomorrow or saturday. If he makes it I will use it and maybe that will help but probably its stress in this instance. What dosage do I use for the harkers?
he actually made it to this morning! I was pretty sure he wouldn't but he did! I am really surprised.
here he is sitting by his bulb.
Use the same dosage as it says on the bottle. A lot of people use it who keep various types of birds, it is pretty good stuff. Shame you don't have any Baycox, that is the best for coccidiosis
